Can we keep waiting?

For more than 20 years I worked in an environmental fund with the hope of building a better future for Mexico and for our children. Like many other people, I thought that actions to stop and reverse the degradation of natural resources were the responsibility of the government and civil society organizations. I thought it was easy to block the sun with a finger or turn a blind eye by making a couple of environmentally responsible adjustments at home, but leaving the big challenges of conservation to the heavy cavalry: those who are visible and have a voice.

A couple of months ago I had a dream that fell like a bucket of cold water: I dreamed that my great-great-granddaughter asked me what I had done for the planet when I learned about the problems that our modern lifestyle would cause future generations ... Without being able to answer and with a knot in my heart I realized that leaving all the work and responsibility to these great actors was not enough.

We can no longer wait for others to change the destiny of our planet: it is time to take seriously the warnings about the future that we are leaving our children and, from our trench, do everything in our power to reverse the deterioration ... Now that we still have time.

We cannot keep waiting for governments or corporations to solve the very serious problems of public health and environmental degradation: there will not be enough money to solve them if, as a society, we do not attack them from the root. We must start with what we put on our plate and our children's plate. Perhaps it is worth it that, with a lot of conscience, you ask yourself: "what are my children eating?" and, depending on the answer, define if the time has come to put aside the beliefs that your family, friends, doctors, the mass media and even the government repeat. The mass media have conditioned us for many years and it is time to start asking ourselves what really makes us feel good, to analyze our behavior and decide our path. Isn't it funny that Despite incredible technological advances in medicine, much of the world's population lives in a state of chronic disease? Our current situation is the result of an unfortunate combination of factors: 1) the degradation and contamination of our natural resources, 2) an excessive increase in the consumption of animal products, 3) the low consumption of products of plant origin and 4) the radical change in our lifestyle.

Some experts say that in 50 to 100 years all human beings will have a plant-based diet. Whether that happens as a result of a catastrophe or as a result of a peaceful and pro-life transformation, it will depend on 1) our making the right decisions today and 2) our commitment as a society to bring about the change that the planet urgently needs. My recommendation is - if you want to make a change that positively transforms your life, that of your loved ones and that of future generations - that you start by listening to yourself and feeling, in your own body, what is the right thing to do and what does it do to you feel good. What I am proposing is not a campaign against the consumption of animal products. My proposal is only to lower the huge amount that we consume daily,

If you decide to see these challenges as opportunities for transformation, your presence in the world will not be passing but will leave a deep mark on the change that future generations need.

What better gift for our children?
